Prison reimagined: presidential Portrait Project

  • Indy Art Center 820 East 67th Street Indianapolis, IN, 46220 United States (map)

Step into a thought-provoking exhibition at the Indy Art Center, curated by the Committee of Incarcerated Writers and Artists (CIAW), where history intersects with the urgent issue of justice. This unique showcase features presidential portraits paired with each president’s record on incarceration, prompting viewers to reflect on the past and its implications for the future. Led by Caddell Kivett, an editor at Nash News and a resident of Nash Correctional Institution in North Carolina, this project goes beyond traditional art displays. It serves as a powerful platform for personal essays and creative visions that challenge us to reimagine what true justice could look like.

Located in Broad Ripple along the banks of the White River, the Indy Art Center boasts a vibrant 40,000 square foot building designed by renowned architect Michael Graves, along with the original ARTSPARK—a 9.5-acre outdoor creativity and sculpture garden. The Art Center strives to build a stronger and more united community through art, offering hundreds of classes, contemporary art exhibitions, outreach programs for underserved communities, and much more. Join us in exploring this transformative exhibition!
